Frequently Asked Questions
To ensure you are well-prepared for various situations, it is advisable to carry a range of payment methods. While traveling to South Africa, the following payment options are available:
Credit Cards: Major credit cards like Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted throughout South Africa. This includes hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and larger businesses. Ensure your card is set up for international transactions and inform your bank of your travel dates to prevent any issues with your account.
* Please be aware that both Visa and MasterCard credit cards may incur international transaction fees when used in South Africa. It is advisable to check with your card issuer before traveling to understand the specific fees that may apply.
American Express (AMEX) – Yes, American Express (AMEX) is accepted in South Africa, but its acceptance may not be as widespread as Visa or MasterCard. Larger hotels, higher-end restaurants, and certain retail outlets are more likely to accept AMEX. However, some smaller businesses and establishments might not accept it.
It’s a good idea to carry a backup payment method, such as Visa or MasterCard, to ensure you can make purchases or payments without issues. Additionally, make sure to inform AMEX of your travel plans to avoid any issues with your card while abroad.
* Please be aware that using your American Express (AMEX) card in South Africa may incur international charge fees. Before traveling, it is advisable to check with your card issuer for specific details regarding these fees.
Debit Card and PIN – Yes, you can use your debit card and PIN number at ATMs in South Africa to withdraw cash. However, there are a few important considerations:
- International Access: Ensure that your debit card is set up for international use. Contact your bank or card issuer before traveling to inform them of your trip and to confirm that your card will work abroad.
- PIN Requirements: Your PIN should be a four-digit number, as most ATMs in South Africa require a four-digit PIN for transactions. If your PIN is longer or uses non-numeric characters, you might need to check with your bank for compatibility.
- Fees: Be aware of potential fees for international withdrawals, including transaction fees charged by your bank and ATM fees. Check with your bank about these fees to avoid surprises.
Cash: As you prepare for your trip to South Africa, it’s important to note that the local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). While credit and debit cards are widely accepted, having access to local currency upon arrival is strongly recommended. Cash is best used for gratuities or small purchases from local vendors. You can conveniently order South African Rand at a local bank before departure, using exchange bureaus in the airport, or withdraw cash from approved ATMs upon arrival in South Africa.
Mobile Payments: Mobile payment options like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay are increasingly accepted in major cities and at larger establishments. However, acceptance can vary, so it’s prudent to have alternative payment methods available.

WHAT TO WEAR & PACK
South Africans are generally laid back when it comes to clothing, so there is no need to haul out your best silks and diamonds when heading for our shores unless you’re attending a very prestigious event.
Bring cool, light, and comfortable clothes for summer because summer temperatures can get well into the 30 °C range in some areas.
Also, bring an umbrella or raincoat during summer as this is when most of the country gets rain. In areas like Gauteng and the North West province, thundershowers are common. A light jacket or wrap is a good precaution. Don’t forget a swimsuit.
The winters are generally mild, comparing favorably with European summers. But we do get some days when temperatures dive, especially in high-lying areas such as the Drakensberg, so be prepared with jerseys and jackets. In addition, Cape Town gets its rain during the winter season, so bringing rain gear along is advisable.
Always bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock, as the sun can be intense, even in winter.
Walking shoes are a good idea all year-round, with warm socks in the winter.
If you are doing business in the country, business attire (suit and tie) is generally called for in the corporate sector, but media, for example, dress more casually.
For game viewing, neutral-toned items are advised, but there’s no need to go overboard. A good pair of walking shoes is also advisable. Camouflage clothing and/or accessories are NOT acceptable.
For the evening, if you are dining at an upscale restaurant or seeing a show, smart/casual attire is recommended.
Leave some room in your suitcase for South African clothing. Information on local designers can be found on the internet. Look out for local labels like Hip Hop, Stoned Cherrie, Maya Prass, Ebok, and many more.
WHAT TO PACK
Please note that these are just suggestions and depend on the month/season travelling. Warmer clothes are required for travelling in June/July/August.
People often ask us to recommend things we think they should bring when going on a safari. Through our own and previous guests’ experiences, we have compiled a list of those items we have found to be useful and necessary.
- 1-2 pair(s) of smart/casual trousers
- 2-3 pairs of shorts
- 4 shirts/t-shirts (any combination)
- 1 light cotton sundress for the ladies
- 1 pair of walking/running shoes
- 1 pair of sandals/crocs etc.
- 1 swimsuit
- 1 hat
- sunscreen
- water bottle
- mosquito repellent (with DEET if possible); can be purchased at the resort.
- light jacket/cardigan for the evenings (depending on the season of travel)
Our summer months are from the end of August to April, with the hottest period from October to February. One should expect rainstorms or drizzle on any of these days. However, it hardly ever rains continuously, and generally, the rainstorms last only an hour or so. We provide rainproof ponchos for guests to use on the vehicles during game drives and sufficient umbrellas for guests to use at the lodges. Our winter is from May to July, with the coldest period being towards the end of June and July. We provide fleece blankets for guests on the vehicles during game drives.
ADDITIONAL PACKING GUIDELINES
It may, at times, be very cold during the early morning and evening safari. Therefore, a warm fleece jacket, a scarf, and a warm hat will be needed. A pair of warm gloves may also be an added advantage.
You may also want to bring a warm tracksuit to wear instead of a dress or light trousers.
Try to keep the colors of your clothing as neutral as possible to blend in with the environment. Khaki colors and browns or greens are generally the best. Darker colors and colors that are very bright tend to attract unwanted insects such as mosquitoes and other bug-type visitors.
You should bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes for use during bush walks or when off the game drive vehicle and a pair of sandals or flip-flops to wear around the lodge. Mealtimes are generally informal, so dressing up in formal clothing for dinner is optional. If you wear prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, bring a spare pair in case yours get mislaid or broken. Also, ensure that you have sufficient lens cleaning solution as the outdoor environment may, at times, become extremely dusty, which could require frequent cleaning.
You should also bring a video or digital camera, a good pair of binoculars, enough memory cards for your camera (or film for those who still prefer to use film), plug and charger for your camera equipment. Don’t forget a powerbank just in case you run out of power at the wrong moment. Should you want to send emails or photos home to friends or family, you should bring your laptop or personal computer. We have wireless internet spots at some of our lodges. We also have a dedicated computer set aside for guests at all our lodges.
All our rooms are supplied with basic amenities such as soap, shampoo, and body lotions. You may, however, also want to bring your favorite items with you. We have a reasonably priced 24-hour laundry service available for guests at all our lodges.
There are curio shops at all of our lodges, so purchasing most of the items listed above is possible should any of them be forgotten. Please travel with minimal luggage. We suggest using only ONE suitcase, if possible, as inter-land airline baggage restrictions are less weight than international flights.
If you’re in your hotel room, contact the emergency number provided or the front desk. If you’re out and about, dial 10111 from a landline for the police or 112 from a mobile phone for emergency assistance.
We are pleased to offer in-house laundry services at all the resorts and lodges listed below. Please keep in mind that this service comes at an extra cost and can be arranged upon request at the property.
- Dunkeld Country Estate
- Royal Morubisi
- Tshukudu Game Lodge
- Ladybird Vineyards Lodge
- The Shark Bay Hotel
- Stillness Manor & Spa
Unfortunately, Belle Maroc is unable to provide in-house laundry services. However, they can make arrangements for your laundry to be handled offsite. If this option is chosen, please note that the laundry will be returned the following day.
Every property is unique, and it is best to enquire about what options are available.
Please consult your healthcare provider before you depart for updated information and treatment appropriate to your health and circumstances.
The first rule of malaria prevention is to avoid being bitten; that way, you will not contract malaria. The Female Anopheles Mosquito (the exclusive carrier and culprit) can bite at any time of day but is usually most active from dusk to dawn.
Overall, control initiatives have been very successful in the malaria transmission areas. Mostly falciparum malaria is seen. The risk remains low in KwaZulu-Natal and is confined to the very far northern parts of KZN. There is no malaria in the Drakensberg, Hluhluwe, and Umfolozi Game Parks and St Lucia areas.
Mozambique has year-round malaria, and the risks in Southern Zambia, Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls) will likewise increase. Therefore, measures to reduce mosquito bites are essential.
The Kruger National Park is one of two South African National Parks situated in malaria-risk areas. The other park is Mapungubwe National Park. It is important to note that the risk of malaria in both parks is usually low. The SA Minister of Health identifies the window for malaria season between September and May.
MALARIA PRECAUTIONS INCLUDE:
- Consulting with your physician on the use of prophylaxes and vaccinations.
- Applying DEET-containing insect repellents to exposed areas.
- Wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and socks, and hat when outside, ensuring to cover all exposed areas.
- Wear neutral-colored clothing.
- Keep window gauze and doors closed at all times and ensure that the chalets’ air-conditioners are fully functional.
Please note, with Go Touch Down, only one of our Safari Tours visits the Kruger National Park, and only for a one-day excursion between 9 am and 3 pm.
Any person developing flu-like symptoms 7 to 20 days (or even longer) after being in malaria-risk areas should be tested immediately for malaria until the symptoms clear or an alternative diagnosis is made. It is, therefore, essential to advise medical practitioners that you have been in a malaria-risk area to avoid incorrect diagnosis.
Please consult your healthcare provider before you depart for updated information and treatment appropriate to your health and circumstances.

It is important to note that venison (game meat) is seldom braaied (barbecued) in South Africa as it’s best to cook or stew to make it tender.
South Africans will not surprise you by not announcing what meats are being braaied. With such a wonderful selection and spread on offer, you will have plenty to choose from

WHAT TRADITIONAL FOOD IS SERVED IN SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa boasts excellent fresh produce, meat, fruit, fish, and seafood, and is renowned for its award-winning wines.
Types of dishes served include:
BRAAI (barbeque): There is arguably nothing more traditional than a South African braai, and it is deeply rooted in modern South African culture. A traditional braai is done on wood or charcoal, giving the meat a distinct flavor. Using gas to cook does not count as a real braai. Of course, no braai is complete without pap and boerewors, braaibroodjies, sosaties, lamb chops, steak, some chicken, and crayfish. There is, of course, no better way to finish off all that food than with South Africa’s favorite desserts – malva pudding, milk tart, and peppermint crisp tart.
SOSATIES (a type of kebab): With its Cape Malay origin, the sosatie is a traditional South African meat dish. Ingredients may include chicken, beef, or lamb with dried apricots, onions, and mixed peppers skewered and typically cooked on a braai, shish-kebab style.
BOBOTIE (curried mince): Brought to South Africa by the Dutch, its rich and hearty, with rich flavors enhanced by spices like curry powder, turmeric, and traditional South African chutney. Topped with milk and egg custard and baked till golden brown. A true favorite for those that have tried it.
CRAYFISH: Referred to as the South Coast lobster, this type of lobster is only found off the shores of South Africa. Locals refer to them as “crayfish” or “kreef.”
BILTONG (seasoned dried meat): A natural process of preserving meat. If you love beef jerky, you will love the intense taste of biltong. The meat is typically cured and spiced with coriander seed, pepper, nutmeg, chili, sugar, and a wide range of other seasonings. Various types of meat are used, ranging from beef to more exotic meats like ostrich or kudu. The taste is that of well-seasoned steak.
POTJIEKOS (a small pot of food and pronounced poi-key-cos): Its one of South Africa’s most iconic signature dishes. This favorite South African “stew” is traditionally cooked in a three-legged cast iron pot (cauldron) on an open fire. The main difference between a “potjie” and a stew is that a “potjie” is never stirred during the cooking process and slowly cooks for hours over hot coals. The “potjie” typically consists of various ingredients using either beef, vison, mutton, chicken, and even fish, layered with veggies and an array of herbs and spices, wine, or stock.
BUNNY CHOW (bread bowl): One of the best South African fast-food dishes you will ever try. Consisting of a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with exotic curry and some side dishes. It is truly a one-of-a-kind sandwich.
Also, try some traditional African and Afro-fusion dishes along with local beers, Cape wines, brandies, and liqueurs. The traditional beer – umqombothi – is a home-brewed sorghum beer sold in many African townships.
South Africa is a perfect family-friendly holiday destination with much for the kids to see and do – from building sandcastles on golden beaches, swimming in the ocean, taking a joy ride in a theme park, spotting wildlife on a game farm, or enjoying adventure activities at one of South Africa’s many resorts.
Child-friendly facilities are found throughout South Africa. Hotels offer inter-connecting rooms, triple bed arrangements, cots, babysitters, mealtime feeding chairs, and children’s rates. Self-catering properties are also an excellent option, especially establishments that offer multi-roomed cottages and apartments.
During peak holiday time, when South African families take their annual breaks (April, July, and December), coastal resorts offer children’s entertainment programs, movie theatres screen with the latest family-oriented movies, and there are special stage shows like the annual pantomime at the Jo’burg Theatre in Johannesburg.
Theme parks such as UShaka Marine World in Durban, Gold Reef City in Johannesburg, and Ratanga Junction in Cape Town are excellent child-friendly facilities in South Africa, as is the Two Oceans Aquarium in the Mother City. Sun City has restyled itself as a family-oriented resort with popular water rides at the Valley of the Waves and animal attractions. Countrywide, there are good zoos, bird parks, crocodile farms, and reptile parks. Some private game lodges may not take children under a certain age, but the national parks are great for family-friendly holidays in South Africa.
If your South African sojourn includes a road trip, national routes are well supplied with ‘pit-stop’ conveniences incorporating gas stations, restaurants, and restroom facilities. Family-style restaurants in South Africa are good about offering children’s menus and keeping the young ones busy with coloring books and crayons as they wait for their meals. Baby food, milk, and nappies are, of course, plentiful in supermarkets. Children’s car seats are available from car rental companies, and airlines will oblige with bassinets – both with advance notice.
With its excellent infrastructure and modern medical facilities, South Africa is an ideal holiday destination for senior travelers.
At Go Touch Down, we ensure all our travelers’ needs are met as we provide private, intimate tours.
Airports, shopping centers, and tourist attractions are often geared toward assisting senior citizens. For those who cannot walk long distances, wheelchairs or on-site transport can usually be arranged.
A visa may or may not be required depending on your country of citizenship.
USA / CANADA / AUSTRALIA
As a tourist visiting South Africa and staying for less than 90 days, you don’t need an advance visa if you possess a United States, Canadian, or Australian passport.
If you’re visiting South Africa for less than 90 days and you’re a citizen of the United States, Canada, or Australia, you’ll need a valid passport as proof of identification and proof of an onward ticket. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after the date you intend to return home. However, if you plan to stay for more than 90 days, you’ll need to obtain a visa.
To obtain a visa upon arrival in South Africa, your US, Canadian, or Australian passport must have at least two completely blank visa pages. These pages should face each other so that the entry stamp can be placed on one page and the exit stamp on the other.
Without proper identification and documentation, you will be denied entry into the country. Therefore, you must ensure you have all the necessary documents to avoid any inconveniences during your travel.
It’s important to note that immigration officers have the authority to deny entry to any traveler.
