On the map, it’s called Dullstroom, a mecca for fly-fishermen, hikers, mountain bikers, plant lovers, horse riders and those who simply want to curl up in front of a log fire and enjoy the scenery. Despite its widespread appeal, Dullstroom still has its own calm, distinctive, and singular atmosphere. + Day 2

An early morning coffee and then, taking a packed breakfast with, you head out to enjoy the day following the Panorama Route, stopping first at Elephant Whispers in Hazyview where you can enjoy personal and educational interactions with these huge, wild animals. After lunch you will find yourself staring out of God’s Window at the canyons that seemingly stretch forever and the waterfalls, and indigenous forest nearly 3000 feet below. The Lisbon Waterfalls, named after the Portuguese who, in the late 1800s, panned for gold in the area, plunges over 300 feet into the ravine. View the intricate network of large, otherworldly potholes, tunnels and whirling pools at Bourke’s Luck Potholes. These bizarre shapes in the sandstone were formed over millennia at the mouth of the canyon by the raging Blyde and Treur Rivers swirling and crashing together. Visible on the other side of the northern edges of the Drakensberg mountains and shaped like traditional African huts are the iconic Three Rondavels, once known as the Chief and His Wives. From there, the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world and largest green covered canyon in the world opens out before us before we return to the hotel for dinner.

After breakfast, you will move across to the Humala River Lodge deep within the Songimvelo Game Reserve. ‘Songimvelo’ means ‘we are conserving nature’ in the siSwati language. This park forms part of the nearly 170 000-hectare Songimvelo-Malolotja Transfrontier Conservation Area straddling the northern border of Swaziland and the south eastern border of South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. It’s a World Heritage Site as it has the best-preserved volcanic and sedimentary rock formations in the world which date back well over 3 billion years and are decorated with some of the world’s oldest Rock Art. Afternoon tea will set you up nicely for your first sunset game drive to experience first-hand the twilight beauty of the African bush, and her wild creatures. Then it’s back to the lodge for dinner accompanied by the unparalleled orchestra and chorus of the wild African night, making your first night in the bush unforgettable.

It’s the unexpected encounters with wild animals that make game drives so rewarding and so awe-inspiring. Each one provides a lifetime of memories, plenty of photo opportunities and a deep love and appreciation for ‘where the wild things are’. Today has both a sunrise and a sunset game drive. In between, you are free to spend the day at leisure, or being pampered in the Bush Spa. If you’re feeling more energetic, you could go swimming, take a riverside bush walk, explore the ancient rock formations near-by, or visit the ancient village ruins and San rock paintings. You could even battle the Komati River’s wild Yellow Fish if fly-fishing is your thing. Enjoy afternoon tea before your sunset game drive and later, return to the lodge for dinner.

+ Day 7

With an early departure including breakfast on-the-go, your destination today is the Pilanesberg National Park for a Big 5 game drive. The 50 000 hectares of this Park are ancient, even by geological time scales, filled with hills, valleys, and broken rock country. Formed by a massive volcanic eruption nearly 1300 million years ago, it is the site of one of the largest volcanic complexes of its type in the world. The remnants of the explosion can still be seen today. The creation of the Park is considered one of the most ambitious programmes of its kind to be undertaken anywhere in the world. Many long-vanished species were re-introduced and you can expect frequent sightings of the Big 5 on your game drive. The Park is the perfect place to enjoy lunch in the middle of the game drive. Afterwards, it’s back to Seasons with plenty of time to rest and freshen up before enjoying a uniquely memorable South African farewell dinner.
